Othello's characterisation as a black man obviously has some significance otherwise Shakespeare would not have broken with literary convention and made the hero black. At the time, coloured characters where generally villains, for example in Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus the black character was a villain. However, it seems to me that Othello's blackness is a way of making him an outsider, immediately putting him on the edge of a society that he is trying to marry into. He does not understand its coventions, which is what allows Iago to manipulate Othello's views of his wife. Othello admittedly did not know Venetian women, allowing Iago to paint them as courtesans just waiting to cuckold their husbands. Desdemona and Othello may love each other, but they don't know each other very well - clear from Desdemona's naive approach to her husbands obvious jealousy and Othello's willingness to believe his wife a filthy woman
